Recipe of Delicious Berry Trifle

Trifle is a delightful British dessert that layers sponge cake, fruit, custard, and whipped cream. Here’s a traditional recipe for making a classic Trifle:

Ingredients

For the Sponge Cake

  • 1 store-bought sponge cake or homemade pound cake

For the Custard

  • 2 cups (480ml) whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch

For the Fruit Layer

  • 2 cups (about 300g) mixed berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries)
  • 1-2 tablespoons sugar (optional, depending on the sweetness of the fruit)

For Whipped Cream

  • 1 cup (240ml) heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Step 01: (Prepare the Custard)

  • In a saucepan, heat the milk and vanilla extract over medium heat until it just begins to simmer.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg yolks, sugar, and cornstarch until well combined.
  • Slowly pour the hot milk mixture into the egg mixture, whisking continuously to avoid curdling.
  • Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until it thickens into a custard. Remove from heat and let it cool.

Step 02: (Prepare the Fruit Layer) If using fresh berries, wash and prepare them. Toss the berries with sugar if desired, allowing them to macerate for a bit.

Step 03: (Whip the Cream) In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream until stiff peaks form. Add powdered sugar and vanilla extract, and continue whipping until well combined.

Step 04: (Assemble the Trifle)

  • If using sherry or fruit juice, lightly soak the sponge cake slices with it.
  • Arrange a layer of sponge cake at the bottom of a trifle dish or individual serving glasses.
  • Add a layer of the custard on top of the cake.
  • Add a layer of mixed berries.
  • Repeat the layers until you reach the top, finishing with a layer of whipped cream.

Step 05: (Decorate) Garnish the top with additional berries or a sprinkle of grated chocolate for decoration.

Step 06: (Chill) Cover the trifle and refrigerate for at least 2-3 hours or overnight to allow the flavors to meld.

Step 07: (Serve) Serve the trifle chilled. Use a long spoon to scoop out each layer for a perfect bite of cake, custard, fruit, and cream.

Step 08: (Enjoy) Enjoy the layers of flavor and texture in this classic Trifle!
