This earthquake was one of the most disparaging and lethal in the history of Mexico. The City was suffered severe damage from an earthquake with an epicenter thousands of miles away on Mexico’s west coast.

On 19th September, 1985, Mexico’s was hit with devastating earthquake of magnitude 8.1 Its epicenter was in a subduction zone in the western part of the country, in Baja California near Michoacan, causing widespread destruction and resulting in significant loss of life. The earthquake was particularly destructive due to its proximity to densely populated urban areas.

Mexico City, being situated on soft lakebed sediments, experienced severe shaking, leading to the collapse of numerous buildings. The densely populated capital suffered extensive damage, with many structures reduced to rubble.

At least 9,500 people were killed, about 30,000 were injured, more than 100,000 people were left homeless, and severe damage was caused in parts of Mexico City approximately three billion U.S. dollars of damage, and was felt by almost twenty million people.

Moreover, the earthquake also extensive damage to infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and utilities, further complicating rescue and recovery operations. The disaster brought about a remarkable display of solidarity among the Mexican people. Civil society, volunteers, and international aid organizations worked together to provide assistance, rescue survivors, and support recovery efforts.
