A deceased Fin Whale, measuring 52 feet, washes ashore at San Diego beach
A massive Fin Whale, measuring 52 feet, washed ashore on Pacific Beach in San Diego, creating a spectacle that fascinated locals and prompted the involvement of various agencies.
The lifeless whale, discovered early morning near Santa Rita Place, caused concern as it exhibited signs of bleeding from its side. Michael Milstein from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) suggested that the bleeding was likely caused by birds pecking at the whale rather than a significant injury.
Attempts by lifeguards to tow the whale back into the sea were unsuccessful, leading to the gathering of onlookers, including personnel from the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department and the Police Department.
NOAA researchers arrived later, establishing a perimeter to conduct investigations into the cause of the whale’s death. Despite being a female juvenile, the whale showed no visible propeller marks or gashes that could indicate a vessel-related demise.
As researchers gathered data and captured photographs, the mystery surrounding the whale’s death deepened. Milstein appealed to the public to provide researchers with space, emphasizing the unknown cause of death.
